Gedling MW vs Holbrook, Saturday 13 August -- Match
report

Special thanks to Mick Booth for writing the following match report.
Gedling began their first game of the season in torrential rain
and had new signings Guislanzoni and Parson playing. Club captain
Jason Boomer Booth will be out for a month because of a suspension
picked up last season. Holbrook were the first to show when they
broke into Gedling box, but Parsons block fell to Dainty who it
a weak shot wide of the goal. Hogg went on a good run down the right
and put over a good cross that was cleared by the Holbrook defence.
McCaughey had a chance but shot weakly past the post. Dainty made
progress down the right and played the ball into Roulston, but Tideswell
moved in to make a good tackle and clear the danger. Allsopp tried
to shot but it went high and wide.
Holbrook broke and a good cross by Anderson was headed clear by
the ball. The ball came straight back into the box and this time
it was Wright who got up to head the ball to safety. Holbrook then
got a free kick just outside the Gedling box and Black stepped up
to hit a powerful shot that Parlett diving to his left, somehow
got a hand to the ball to put it out for a corner. Ball played a
good ball into the path of Guislanzoni who hit a volley just wide
of the post. McRobie then pulled another good save out of Parlett.
Gedling went straight back on the attack and bull’s cross
headed back into the box by Timson but Clark raced out to claim
the ball. It was an entertaining game with both sides creating some
good chances. A mistake by Astle gave Hogg a chance but as he advanced
into the box Broadhurst got a good tackle in and the chance was
gone. Carter, who had been doing a lot of work in midfield, crossed
the ball into the box and Astle was adjudged to have got a hand
on the ball. The ref awarded Gedling a penalty and Guislanzoni stepped
up to slot the ball past Clark to give them a 0-1 lead on 31 mins.
Gedling nearly went two up minutes later when Guislanzoni hit a
tremendous free kick that came back off the bar.
Holbrook broke quickly and it took a good tackle from Tideswell
to clear the danger. HT 0-1 Holbrook went straight on the attack
at the start of the second half and Parsons did well to get a foot
in and play the ball out to Ball who made progress down the line
and squared the ball into the path of Simson. Kellogg got across
and took the ball off his toe as he was about to shoot. Roulston
played a good ball to Patton in the crowded Gedling box but Parlett
was quick off his line to claim the ball. Anderson had a good chance
for Holbrook when he raced into the box but it took a great tackle
from Wright to keep Gedling’s lead intact. The ensuing corner
was sent in by Black and Dainty rose above the Gedling defence to
put a powerful header into the back of the net to make it 1-1 on
71 mins Carter went on a good run and laid the ball into the path
of Guislanzoni who hit a good shot that was well saved by Clark
and minutes later he made another good save from Nowak.
Gedling hit Holbrook on the break and Wright sent a good cross
over to Nowak who was unlucky to see his header saved. Carter played
a ball into the crowded Holbrook box and there was a shout for a
penalty but the ref was having none of it. Holbrook was putting
the pressure on Gedling as they looked for the winner and both Ball
and Tideswell had to get good tackles in. Guislazoni had a shot
saved and that was the last of the action as the ref blew for full
time FT 1-1.
