Southwell City vs Gedling MW, Saturday 26 March -- Match
report

Special thanks to Mick Booth for writing the following match report.
The game got off to a lively start and a long throw by McGinty was put out for a corner. When the kick came over into the box there was a Gedling shout for handball by a Southwell player but the Ref rightly ignored it. Wright made a good run into the Southwell penalty area and appeared to be brought down but the Ref said he had dived and waved play on. A long throw by McGinty into the Southwell box was headed just over the bar by Wright and then Hogg played the ball through to McCaughey who hit his shot wide. Southwell got a free kick after a foul on B. Saunders but it was headed clear by Irwin and then McCaughey played the ball to Hogg who laid it on for Epps to hit a fierce shot that Miles did well to save.
Minutes later Miles made another good save from Smith and then it was Bodkins turn as he got down well to make a save from B. Saunders. Some good play between Curtis and Wright let Nowak in with a chance but he was ruled offside. Neither side could get on top and they weren't helped by the fussy Ref who blew for everything. Both sides were asking him to let the game flow. Smith sent a free kick over to Wright who saw his header go just wide of the post. Wright, who was having another good game, put another header over the bar from a McCaughey corner kick. A nice bit of football saw Hogg turn his man by the touchline and place a long looping shot towards the top corner but it was just too high and went for a goal kick. That was the last of the first half action as the Ref blew for half time. HT 0-0
A long ball into the Gedling area saw a chase between Wright and B. Saunders but Wright managed to clear. B. Saunders had a good chance minutes later but his weak kick was easily dealt with by Bodkin. A long throw by McGinty was flicked on by Smith to Epps who saw his shot cleared. A Southwell attack was broke up by Hogg at the expense of a corner but Curtis was there to head clear. A foul on Nowak earned Gedling a free kick just outside the box but Epps headed the ball over the bar and then Wright saw his glancing header fly by the post. It was still an even game with both sides getting chances and Irwin got a good tackle in to break up a Southwell attack. Southwell then broke in numbers and looked dangerous but Booth got a foot in to clear.
Southwell were putting the pressure on and T. Campbell ran into the Gedling box but Curtis got a tackle in to clear the danger. Gedling were unlucky not to take the lead when Wright hit a shot that hit the post and rebounded across the goal. The ball was only half cleared out to Hogg who sent over a cross that Epps hit against the bar. It was now Gedlings turn to apply the pressure and it paid off when McGINTY got the ball just outside the box and hit a powerful shot into the top corner of the net to make it 0-1 on 75 mins. Five minutes later Gedling went two up when Bull sent over a cross for Oak. He controlled the ball and laid it on for EPPS who hit a fierce shot past Miles to make it 0-2 on 80 mins. Southwell didn't deserve to be two goals down but they could have pulled one back from a free kick that went across the crowded Gedling penalty area and ran out for a goal kick without anyone getting a foot to it. Turner then hit a good shot that pulled a fine save out of Bodkin and then Bodkin had to palm away a dangerous P. Campbell cross. B. Saunders ran on to a Southwell clearance and hit a shot across the Gedling goal that went past the post to safety. It was a good chance wasted and then Warden hit a shot past the post as Southwell pushed forward. It had been a pretty even game but it's goals that count and two great strikes decided the game for Gedling. FT 0-2.
