Gedling MW vs Arnold Town, Thursday 4 August -- Match
report

Special thanks to Mick Booth for writing the following match report.
Gedling entertained Arnold for the second of their pre-season friendlies
and were expecting a tough workout against Arnold who'd lost only
one game out of five. Arnold made a lively start and Shaw went down
the left and put a cross into the Gedling box that was headed out
by Tideswell at the expense of a corner. Arnold continued to press
and Hall had a great chance to put Arnold in front but he blasted
the ball well wide. Jason 'Boomer' Booth broke up another attack
and laid the ball off to Mawer who went down the line and weaved
his way into the Arnold box. He squared the ball to Ball whose volley
was well saved by McCarthy. Arnold got a free kick just outside
the box and Brady's kick was blocked by Boomer. Mawer went on a
run down the line but his cross was easily dealt with by McCarthy.
Arnold broke quickly and HALL ran in on goal and chipped the ball
over Baker to make it 0-1 on 30 mins.
A few minutes later Hall again had the ball in the net but the
Ref ruled it out for a foul on Baker. Good work by Boomer saw him
work his way into the Arnold box and lay the ball off for Bull whose
shot was put out for a corner that was cleared by the Arnold defence.
Ball did well to break up an Arnold attack but Arnold went further
in front when the ball was crossed into the Gedling box and HUTCHINSON
fired home to make it 0-2 on 36 mins. Arnold were moving the ball
around well and playing some nice football at this point but Gedling
were still making a game of it and could have pulled a goal back.
Mawer went down the line, cut inside and hit a shot that went across
the goal. Carter ran in but just couldn't get a toe to it. Arnold
were quick to attack and the ball was played over to Hall who sent
his header over the bar. A nice ball from Carter found Bull whose
shot was well saved by McCarthy.
HT O-2 Arnold went straight back on the attack at the start of
the second half and Simpson and Mathews both did well to break up
attacks. Mathews then had a chance but his shot was blocked and
his follow up shot was saved by McCarthy. Gedling got a free kick
and McCaughey's cross was hit first time by Curtis who brought out
a great diving save from McCarthy who pushed the ball out for a
corner. Nowak had a chance when he ran into the Arnold box but he
was brought down by Clarke. Despite the Gedling shout for a penalty
the Ref waved play on. Hogg went on a run and hit a cross over to
Mawer who was unlucky when his header went just wide of the post.
Another Arnold attack was broke up by Wright who had been winning
everything in the air throughout the game. Hall received the ball
just inside the Gedling box but he was well policed by Tideswell
and the ball went out for a goal kick. Arnold played some nice football
when Shaw played the ball through to Brady who chipped the ball
over Baker towards the Gedling goal but it went inches wide of the
post. Hogg ran into the Arnold area but his effort was easily dealt
with by McCarthy. Arnold got a free kick just outside the Gedling
box but Simpson got up well to clear the danger.
That was the last of the action as the Ref blew for full time.
It had been a good game to watch and the big crowd went away happy.
Arnold had the advantage of a few games under their belt and they
were far more match fit than Gedling and it showed. Gedling could
take a lot of satisfaction out of the way they had played and they
will only get better as they get to know each other.
All the players did well and that's all you can ask of them. FT
0-2.
