Gedling MW vs Kiveton Park, Wednesday 11 May -- Match report

Mick Booth

Special thanks to Mick Booth for writing the following match report.

Because of the ground improvements at Gedling the rearranged game against Kiveton was played at Greenwood Meadows. Gedling started their final game of the season without Irwin McCaughey, Bull and Epps but welcomed back Chris Hudson to the side after a lengthy suspension. Gedling were the first to show when McGintys header from Wrights free kick was saved by Brown at the near post. Nelson played a ball over the Gedling defence but Bodkin was quick off his line to kick the ball upfield to Mawer who ran on and put his shot just past the post. Jason 'Boomer' Booth broke up a Kiveton attack and played the ball to Wright who went on a run down the right but overran the ball. Kiveton came back on the attack as the ball was played into the Gedling box but Ball got a foot in to clear the danger.  Boomer won a corner and Ben Smith sent the ball over into the crowded Kiveton box where NOWAK pounced on the loose ball and hooked it into the net to give Gedling a 1-0 lead on 22 mins. Martin Smith, who was having a good game in midfield, saw an effort go close before Kiveton got a disputed equaliser. Ben Smith lost the ball just outside the Gedling box and the ball was booted straight at Boomer. The Ref gave a penalty and booked Boomer. It was a harsh decision but GORMAN stepped up to put the ball past Bodkin to make it 1-1 on 25 mins. Good work by Nowak gave Hogg a chance and his shot on the turn brought a good save out of Brown. Mawer hit a hard low shot across goal but Brown did well again to get down to the ball. Mawer put another good cross over and Nowak was unlucky to see his header go just over the bar. Boomer won a free kick and HUDSON marked his comeback with a stunning 30 yard rocket shot that was in the back of the net before Brown could react and gave Gedling a 2-1 lead on 35 mins. Some great play by Hogg gave Nowak a chance and his shot pulled a great save out of Brown as he tipped the ball over for a corner. Kiveton worked the ball out to N. Bracey and his shot was well saved by Bodkin as the Ref blew for half time. It had been a hard fought half to say nothing was there to play for and it ended 2-1.

Gedling went straight on the attack at the start of the second half and M. Smith played a great ball into the Kiveton box but nobody took advantage and the chance was gone and then some good work between B. Smith and M. Smith let McGinty in but his shot went just wide of the post. Ball played a great ball through the Kiveton defence but Brown came out to take the ball as Nowak was about to shoot. A long throw by McGinty was flicked on by Boomer into the path of Nowak who hooked his shot just past the post. M. Smith made good progress down the right and played the ball to Nowak who was unlucky to see his shot come back off the bar and then Boomer played a clever ball into the path of McGinty but Brown got down to save at his feet. It was all Gedling at this point and B. Smith made a good run down the flank before laying the ball off to Ball who hit a powerful shot that brought a great save out of Brown. Oak had a shot that skimmed the bar and then Wright put a lovely ball into the box but no one could get a toe to it. As Gedling poured forward looking for another goal the inevitable happened when Kiveton hit Gedling on the break and GORMAN put the ball past Bodkin to make it 2-2 on 80 mins. Minutes later Kiveton could have taken the lead but for a fantastic diving save by Bodkin to deny N. Bracey and then in the closing seconds Mawer could have been the hero but his powerful shot came back off the bar. It had been a good game for the spectators but once again Gedling had to surrender the lead to a late goal. FT 2-2.
