Ian William's Match Report Vs Carlton Town

Notts Senior Cup (3) Tuesday 2nd February 2010
CARLTON TOWN......................2 (Slack, Whitman)
GEDLING MW..........................3 (Payne 2 Clarke)

Miners spring Cup shock.

The short trip to Unibond Div 1 South team, Carlton Town looked to be a daunting prospect, but the Miners showed their mettle with a fine victory to progress to the quarter finals.

The visitors took the lead on 12 minutes with a fine midfield pass that set up Shaun Clarke, racing in from the left wing to plant a low shot past Ali Barcherini. At the other end Karl Slack was proving a handful for the Gedling back line, and he made no mistake on 21 slotting the ball home for the equaliser. The lead could have been doubled barely a minute later when Slack was through on goal, but was denied a fine save from Lance Walker. This game was proving to be a tale of the 2 ‘keepers. Barcherini looked nervous all night, whereas Walker was having a game to remember with a string of fine saves. The Miners went ahead in the 32the minute. Craig Boulton played a one two with Barry Payne with a deft back heel and the skipper fired home just inside the post.

Carlton are a fine team pushing forward, but the visitors were holding on grimly with Walker once again coming to his sides rescue with at least three double saves from the rampaging Town forwards and both sides saw shots coming back off the woodwork. Tristam Whitman and Justin Jenkins were introduced to wrestle the initiative with Jenkins being denied again by Walker and three minutes from time Whitman popped up for the equaliser. It looked all ends up that extra time and penalties were going to be required to settle the tie.

Deep into injury time, Gedling Sub Chris Hall managed to dig out a teasing high cross from the right. The ball seemed to deceive everybody including Barcherini and Payne was on hand at the far post to thump home the winning header. Mr Rowbotham barely had time to restart the match and the Miners were cock a ‘hoop at a famous victory.

Not a comfortable win by any means, but a great result against quality opposition proves that this squad has the deep rooted desire to persevere and dig deep to get what they deserve. The reward for the victory is a home tie in the Quarters against CML side Forest Town or Boots Athletic from the NSL.
