Ian William's Match Report Vs Graham St Prims

EMCL Premier Division Saturday 9th February 2010

GEDLING MW..........................5 (Hatfield 3, Williams, Marlow)
GRAHAM ST PRIMS.................0

Miners rout “Whizzes” them to 2nd spot.

Due to unavailability and work commitments, enforced changes meant 3 of the Miners back four from the Dunkirk game were changed for the visit of Leicestershire side Graham St Prims, but it made no difference as Gedling powered to a win which ultimately moved them back to 2nd place in the table.

The home team started on the front foot as they powered forward with purpose and Warren Hatfield and Chris Ison were very unlucky in the opening few minutes with a fine shot and a header, respectively. The opening 20 minutes could have produced a hatful of goals as Craig Boulton, Skipper Barry Payne and Shaun Clarke all had worthwhile shots turned away, blocked or saved by James Harvey in the visiting goal. Indeed Harvey had to make a wonder stop from a point blank shot from young defender Marc Williams on the half hour. The pressure finally paid off in the 35th minute. Boulton swung over a right wing corner and Hatfield just failed to make put away the rebound as his shot cannoned off Harvey, but Marc Williams was on the spot to fire home for his first goal in senior football. Still the pressure was unrelenting and Ison again nearly increased the lead, but his shot flew over. A minute from the break and the lead was doubled. A free kick 20 yards out was despatched with aplomb into the corner by Dave Marlow.

The visitors upped their game in the second half and could have reduced the arrears with a fine effort from Matt Freeman, but their attacks were few and far between and seven minutes into the half the game became The Warren Hatfield show. A quick free kick on the half way line was allowed to be taken quickly and with the arguing Prims defence statuesque, Hatfield was allowed to run some 35 yards to slot the ball beneath Harvey for the third. In the 66th minute the game was over as a contest when Warren Hatfield finished off a fine flowing move from midfield with a venomous finish.

The visitors never gave up fighting a lost cause, but the Miners back line coped admirably all night long and any GSP’s efforts were dealt with easily with Lance Walker having an easy evening. Clarke nearly added to the score after 72 but for a tremendous save from Harvey who must have thought he was at the Alamo as attack after attack rained down on his goal. The fifth came with 15 minutes left. A fine right wing cross from Marlow was despatched accurately onto the head of Warren Hatfield who glanced home to complete his hat-trick.

A few scares from long shots were all the visitors had to offer and Walker tipped over a rasping shot from Sam Bayliss in the dying minutes. In the end the Miners cruised to a well deserved victory.

A comprehensive super slick victory maintained with fast flowing attacking football to extend the current unbeaten run to nine league games. The squad showed an attitude that was second to none and the result never looked in doubt from the opening goal.
