Ian Williams Match Report Vs Heanor Town
EMCL Premier Division Saturday 20th February 2010
GEDLING MW..........................1 (Hatfield)
HEANOR TOWN.......................0
Hatfield’s early strike secures the points
An early 8th minute goal settled this encounter in a dour, but absorbing battle at Plains Road.
The home side started the brighter and Robbie Mawer, on his debut, looked lively from the off creating a bagful of chances with his direct left wing play. The opening goal came as Barry Payne flicked on a header from midfield into the path of top scorer Warren Hatfield who deftly lifted the ball over Sam Ogrizovic into the far corner for his 14th of the season. It was no more than the Miners deserved and the lead could have doubled minutes later as a rasping shot from Craig Boulton brushed the bar before going over. Heanor’s attacks were scarce but Jaylee Hodgson tried his luck from 18 yards, firing just over the top. Lance Walker in the home goal was called upon in the 20th minute acrobatically tipping over a fine effort from visiting skipper Gary Webster. As the half wore on the visitors began to get back into the game and nearly equalised as a Graham Wells shot whizzed inches wide. The home forwards were always a threat though and Hatfield could have added to his tally grazing the post from another fine effort. Spurred on by the direct wing play of Mawer and Dave Marlow, the Miners laid siege to the away goal and Boulton again went close clipping the post with a left foot curler. Corey Nightingale also tried his luck with an acrobatic bicycle kick.
A deserved half time lead and Gedling’s direct forward play again nearly bought dividends as a Payne effort was chalked off for a marginal offside decision. Heanor were content to play on the break and at times looked dangerous and more than capable of levelling the game, but dogged home defending kept Dan Williams and Company at bay. Hatfield was proving a handful for the Heanor rearguard and, in truth, the game should have been wrapped up on the hour after good efforts from Mawer and Boulton were repelled. Williams was proving elusive, but the equaliser would not materialise however hard Heanor huffed and puffed, but it was Walker in the home goal that saved his team with a brilliant save on 80, tipping over a point blank bullet header from Hodgson. It was about all the visitors could seriously muster and the Miners should have been home and hosed with the slick midfield doggedness and swift play down the flanks by the two wide players who had excellent games.
This was a dogged performance following the reverse at Gresley and the team did more than enough to nick the three points. In all fairness, the game should have been out of sight in the first half hour. Heanor were disappointing, their only worthwhile efforts were from set pieces and counter attacks
